Lets get one thing carved in stone right away - Dogs are not hairy fluffy kids. The goal is to encourage, not punish. When a dog sits he's more attentive, making it easier to follow commands. Praise and reward anyway, even though you had to 'force' the sit. You have to be geared up to repeat the same order, day in and day out, and occasionally not get the same outcome.Patience is the number one required quality, therefore. Most dogs won't go own the first few times. The latter they do only when they have no choice. But they can be easily distracted, or fail to associate today's case of 'come' with yesterday's action and subsequent reward. That way a dog associates the behavior with the command. As a result, it can be frustrating to repeat the same command over and over, only to have the dog apparently ignore you.Dog Training - Down Command - Dogs have a natural inclination to adhere to a hierarchy with an alpha (leader) at the top.At first the dog will have no idea why it's being praised but it doesn't matter as with repetition the behavior will follow the command. It also leads to behaviors like 'rollover' and 'crawl'. It seems it should be obvious - they've done the action with success many times before - but today they are just 'being obstinate'. Wait for the response. They don't associate cause and effect in the same way. As important is what he is not doing! In a sit dogs can't chase cats, knock over furniture, run into the street. But dogs make choices very differently from people. But that's reserved in the wild for only the most severe circumstances. If the dog backs up do the technique near the couch or a fence where he has nowhere to go. Try to be away from other voices. When the dog is in position, praise lavishly even though you executed the movement not the dog. Dog Training - Sit Command - Few behaviors are as fundamentally important as 'sit'. Physical punishment just isn't an effective training technique. Take special care with young hips - don't force a completely uncooperative dog this way.Part of that patience means keeping your temper when you would like to lash out physically.Patience and commitment is key to training any behavior. To command sit, stand and face the dog then make the command. But they don't reason out or get context the way humans do.Some dogs likely are what would, in humans, be called obstinate. Punish them for not behaving the way you want.Dogs, like humans, much more readily follow those they trust than those they fear. It's easy to use physical punishment as the first route of correcting a dog's behavior. And never let him train you. After several repetitions try just using a 'waving down' hand movement, palm toward the floor or ground.Dog Training - How NOT To Train Your DogJust about every dog owner truly wants to train their dog well. But a nearly equal number will underestimate the time, skill and elbow grease it takes to do it as it needs to be done - Especially if they are a new dog owner and have bought a high energy breed when they should have gone for a lower energy submissive type. Be patient, clear and consistent. It instills fear, not trust. As a last resort, for the stubborn or slow learner, give the command and at the same time push gently on the back near the

Wikipedia on training house training a dog

Obedience training usually refers to the training of a dog and the term is most commonly used in that context. Obedience training ranges from very basic training, such as teaching the dog to reliably respond to basic commands such as "sit", "down", "come", and "stay", to high level competition within clubs such as the American Kennel Club and the Canadian Kennel Club, where additional commands, accuracy and performance are scored and judged.

Obedience implies compliance with the direction or command given by the handler. For a dog to be considered obedient rather than simply trained in obedience, it must respond reliably each time the command is given, by what is commonly known as its handler. A dog can go through Obedience training and not be obedient. If a dog is referred to as being Obedience Trained it should comply immediately with every command its handler gives. In the strictest sense an Obedience trained dog is an obedient dog.

Training a dog in obedience can be an ongoing and lengthy process depending on the dog, the methods used, and the skill and understanding of both the trainer and the handler. The level of obedience the handler wishes to achieve with the dog is also a major factor in the time involved, as is the commitment to training by the handler.

Obedience training is often a prerequisite for or component of other training.

The actual training of the dog can be done by anyone, the trainer, owner, or a friend. Typically the individual who is caring for and living with the dog participates and trains the dog, as they will be the one who will be giving the commands. The relationship and trust between the dog and handler are important for success.

Basic or beginner's obedience is typically a short course ranging from six to ten weeks, where it is demonstrated to the handler how to communicate with and train the dog in a few simple commands. With most methods the dog is trained one command at a time. Though there may or may not be a specific word attached to it, walking properly on a leash, or leash control, is often the first training required prior to learning other commands.
